Introduction to Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings for Architects
14 December 2013
Speaker: Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Shahir Liew
Venue:PAM Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Synopsis:

Malaysia has traditionally been blessed geographically by being located just outside the reach of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This strategic landmass has allowed buildings throughout to be designed without seismic consideration during detailed engineering and construction phases. In recent years, seismic activity in the region has started to see an increased activity and this has been documented by several local and regional researchers in the area of seismic engineering and geosciences. These originate mainly for the Sumatran subduction zone where most of the major quakes have occurred including the devastating quake that resulted in the 2004 Acheh Tsunami. The impact of this event left Penang island with a certain extent of damage leaving Malaysians to ponder the future of seismic events in the region. As a result, the governing bodies such as CIDB for onshore industry have been receptive to this and has established guidelines for seismic consideration in building design. This has been followed by the lead operator of offshore assets, PETRONAS in taking up specific studies to characterize the risk of seismic events to our most crucial economic resource, offshore oil & gas. As such, efforts to create awareness and understanding on seismicity are underway to engage all stakeholders in the construction, oil & gas and development industry. The characterization of risk and methods of mitigation will be crucial for both future designs and existing assets.
