6 April 2013
Speaker: Ar. Chong Lee Siong
Venue: PAM Northern Chapter, Pulau Pinang

Synopsis:
Part III: Active System
Fire safety is a vital criteria in the buildings we design. In Parts 1 and 2, we discussed the concepts of means of egress and compartmentation and explored the interpretations and applications of the relevant provisions in the UBBL. Now in Part 3, we progress into the subject of Active Systems. Active systems are the mechanical and electrical components that complements the passive configuration of a building in achieving the level of fire safety as stipulated by the UBBL. This paper shall introduce the concepts of active systems, the various functions and configurations that are available, provisions of the relevant by-laws and how it is possible to achieve seamless integration of active systems into architectural designs.

Part IV: Fire Fighting Access
Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat is now equipped with very sophisticated vehicles and equipment for most foreseeable situations. However a well designed building and layout will facilitate the fire fighting and rescue efforts. This is the one aspect of fire safety design that is necessary for architects to go beyond the basic provisions of the UBBL.
