Synopsis

The Industrialized Building Systems (IBS) Roadmap 2003-2010published by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) outlines severalwell-thought strategies and aggressive steps to promote the use of IBS in Malaysia. The government is taking the leading role to persuade the construction industry to engage a more systematic approach and methodology in construction. It is a strategic change in the construction industry and the effort started in 1998. Besides the aim to gradually reduce the dependency on foreign labour and saves the country from losing out foreign exchange, IBS provides the opportunity for the players in the construction industry to develop a new image of the construction industry to be at par with other manufacturing industries such as car and electronic industries. With the present conventional methods of construction, the industry is always associated with many unprofessional practices. The adoption of IBS promises to elevate every level of the industry to a new height and image of professionalism. By adopting IBS, efficient, clean, safe, professionally managed and handled by professionals and workers with relevant skills, proper coordination and management, precision, innovative and quality will be appeared as new attributes to be associated with the construction industry

Speaker Biography

Sumarni Ismail is the Founder of Architecture programme for Part 1 and Part II at the Faculty of Design and Architecture, University Putra Malaysia. She is a lecturer at the Department of Architecture and specializes in teaching History of Islamic Architecture, History of South-East Asia and Advance Studio for Part II. She has supervised postgraduate students in the area of not only architecture, but also in socio-culture, arts, urban, sustainable design and Industrialized Building System (IBS).

Sumarni holds a PhD in the area of Conservation Management focusing on the Management of Cultural Property at the World Heritage Site in Malaysia from the University of Malaya, Master of Architecture degree from SCI-Arch, California, and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from University of Texas, USA. Upon completion of her studies, she was attached to Kumpulan Senireka Sdn Bhd for five years as an Architect, and was responsible for the development of a new township at Jalan Meru, Klang. She has a wide range of experience ranging from designing to project management of high-rise and commercial buildings, housing, and institutional building projects.

Sumarni is a graduate member (Architect) of LAM since 1995 and a member of Concrete Society of Malaysia (CSM) since 2010. She is also an Expert Committee Member of IBS and is an appointed trainer for Modular Coordination/IBS by the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia since 1998. She is an Advisor and Research Consultant for Yayasan Ikhlas (2015) and as Secretary 1 for Kelab Kebajikan Wanita Yayasan Ikhlas.
